Signtronix: How We Know Signs Are Valuable

A sign salesman was speaking with the storeowner when he was asked a very pointed question: “How do you know a lighted sign will increase the number of people who visit my store?” Instead of answering with a trite, “Trust me!” the wise sales man provided an informative and thought-provoking answer to this valid question.

The salesman asked the storeowner how many people visited his store each day, and the estimate was about 100 people each business day. His next question was about the number of passersby, out on the busy downtown street, walked by the door of the store between dawn and midnight. The guess was approximately 1,000.

After observing for a few minutes, the salesman believed that figure to be low, but he decided to use that daily figure, which would add up to 6,000 passersby each week. Since many of them would pass by multiple times, he decided to use 3,000 for his calculation.

The recent census estimated that the annual income in that community was close to $50,000. He continued his discussion with the storeowner so they could establish an estimate of the percentage of a household income that would be spent in his store. After deciding on five percent, which meant $2,500 per year from each household, or $50 per week.

When the final calculations were tallied, the 3,000 people each week multiplied by $50 per week would be a potential income of $150,000 per week that was possible in the store. Current sales calculations based on the 100 people who came in the store meant that the income per week averages $30,000. The remaining 80 percent of potential sales had to be won somehow.

Back to our story: the salesman explained that even if he cut the potential sales figure in half, there was $75,000 in potential sales each week. While paying the same amount of rent, taxes and insurance, the business owner could more than double his sales by spending some money on a sign.

This timeless story appeared in the December 15, 1913 issue of ST. Ninety-eight years later business owners are still asking the same question. Every dollar must be stretched to its limit in these lean times, and putting up an attractive sign might be the best decision made for the new year.

Oklahoma Red Hawks

SigntronixRM Richard H would like to announce a change of name for the Tulsa Oilers to the Oklahoma Red Hawks. Richard said, “I’m making the change to infuse a new spirit into my Region.”

The Native Americans revered the bird with sacred qualities. The hawk is a symbol of power in Indian lore; they say whenever you see a hawk nearby, you will have a powerful day. According to Lakota, the hawk’s spirit is responsible for swiftness and stamina.

The Hawk has impeccable vision and patience. With eyesight eight times stronger than that of humans, the hawk is able to scan a vast area in search of high-potential feeding grounds. It carefully chooses where and when to land. The hawk exhibits what Robert Hargrove refers to in Masterful Coaching as “disciplined intensity.” Its focus and mission are evident in every move. The hawk’s intent is clear, and yet it does not appear fierce -- only focused. Hawks model what it means to be observant. Look at your surroundings. Observe the obvious in everything that you do. Life is sending you signals. Be aware! The hawk excels in using available energy, soaring on the winds with little excess motion.

They soar high in the sky, very close to the Spirits. They have the ability to look down and see the big picture, but they can also focus on a tiny little mouse. The Hawk has an amazing ability to adapt and survive in any surroundings or circumstances. They live in rural areas in trees and in cities on top of tall buildings. They hunt along major highways and in country fields.

In Egyptian lore, Isis is said to have shape shifted into a Hawk to save Osiris. Horus carried Hawk medicine which allowed him to see the “unseeable”.

Among Native American traditions, the Hawk is the messenger of change. Hawks reminded the people they needed to be awake and aware and can achieve great things through persistence and sheer strength of will.

Finally, in Native American Indian lore about the seasons of the year, the hawk is the spirit of spring -- the beginning of a new year, with vision, intelligence and action.

Kansas City Closers

The Signtronix Kansas City Closers “Closed” the year 2009 with style! RM Jim B talked to Steve J at 7:30 am before they both went out to work and Steve said, “Jim, I’m going to get a sale today just before the holiday.” Jim left and lit-up his first customer and sold a set of Model 48 Panels and a pair of 2-line Monochrome EMC’s. While writing up the order, the phone rang and it was Steve J. He was writing up his first lite-up at the same time! Steve wrote a Model 48. Jim said, “Steve reminds me of myself. It does not matter if you call Steve at 6:30am or 6:30pm, he is always working and he puts in his lite-ups. Great Job, Steve.”

Jim is excited about a new guy in the office that just started working in the field. His name is Damien, so watch out for “DAMIEN THE CLOSER!”

DM John S and Jim have recruited two new Closers Patrick and Kirk S. Both of these guys have a tremendous sales background, and they are ready and eager to start their careers with Signtronix. Kirk S was a Gulf salesman many years ago and, after seeing what we have today, Kirk was literally blown away. Watch out for the Kansas City Closers in 2011!

If you know RM Denny G, you know he loves helping businesses, especially ones where he can eat lunch! He ran across a Hot Dog Stand that was run out of a camper style truck. The sign was flimsy and faded… Denny knew he could help.

So, like any ole’ customer, Denny went up and ordered a couple hot dogs and a cold drink. He began eating and was surprised how good the food tasted! The owner struck up a conversation and Denny simply expressed how incredible the hot dogs were. Then, Denny said, as only Denny could, “These could be some of the best hot dogs I’ve ever had… it’s too bad your sign says your food is terrible and you don’t want any new customers!” The owner was taken back a little, but replied, “It really says that? I’ve never thought about my sign being my business image and talking to my customers. I thought it was just a name.”

Denny began teaching the owner about signage. He was a little skeptical, but after a call to Denny’s previous customer who told him, “Don’t hesitate a minute to work with Denny! As soon as we put up our sign, we saw a 70% increase in business! Buy the sign, buy the sign!” The Hot Dog Stand owner hung up the phone and said, “Let’s do it!”

It Takes A Village….

The old saying goes It takes a Village to Raise a Child. The same is true in the Signtronix world. It takes a village to raise a successful Dealer and it takes an entire country to raise a successful Manager. While personal determination and self discipline is mandatory to succeed in this business, having a "village" rallying around you can propel you to unimaginable success.

For RM Paul S, his village has the utmost respect and admiration for him and couldn't be more proud for his latest achievement, the Kozell T. Boren Award. They continue to rally around him because he has continually rallied around each of them. Paul's wife, Beth, his three children, Ginger, Paul Jr. And Cinnamon, as well as his seven grandchildren, have stood by him every step of the way. From his lovely family to his Carolina Panthers to his infinite number of friends and colleagues around the country, Paul will be the first to tell you how much their unconditional support has influenced his success.

Paul's beautiful wife, Beth, said, "Over the past 35+ years, I've seen Paul work through the recessions, work through the good times and succeed regardless. He keeps on keeping on. Of all the things he's been through, he gets up every morning, puts a smile on and goes to work. Paul never lets anything get him down."

Bill B wrote TEN contracts before RM Paul and Beth S even left for Cancun. You know that means a bonus sign! Great job, Bill! Roger Paul and Scott L worked together for a few short, successful days. They placed two locations with two EMC's and a Model 48! Sam C placed three more locations, two Model 44's and a set of Model 46 Panels! Paul said, "Great work, guys! We're all proud of you!" Signtronix Kansas City Closers

The Closers are doing great in 2010. Steve J is HOT right now! He wrote a pair of 6-line RGB's to a Motel, a pair of 3-line Tri-Color boards to a Convenience Store, an LED-60 to a Computer Shop and a Model 48. Way to go, Steve! Sam L is the newest Closer! You may not want to forget this name because you will be reading about him in future News & Views. DM John S was out with a new Dealer and sold SEVEN contracts! New Dealer Kirk S wrote a Model 412, a pair of Model 58 panels and an LED-40 Combo. Kirk studied his presentation and paid close attention during his field training. RM Jim B said, "I am really proud of Kirk and the effort he put into learning our business of signtronix advertising. He is a great person, a hard worker and he is not afraid to work." Jim sold a Model 326 to a Hair Salon and a Model 612 with two Tri-Color EMC's, but the news keeps getting better in Kansas City! Miguel O topped everyone today selling two stock RGB displays, a Model 312 and a Model 28! That was good news except Miguel was not done. He wrote another contract back-to-back with FOUR more signs.

Best Foot Forward

Dear Signtronix,

We just wanted to write you and let you know that we are pleased with our sign. Although we are in a very quiet area and have to rely on repeat customers and word of mouth, that wasn't satisfying us. We wanted more! Your salesman Dennis was an angel, he guided us through the daunting task of designing a sign to get our message out there.

After just one month we noticed a difference. There were new customers, a 1/3 of our new business said they either drove by or lived near by and had seen our Signtronix sign. Stopped by Because of the Sign

Gentlemen:

Timing is really everything! We became the general managers of Paul's Place, Bar and Country Kitchen on November 1, 2002. By a stroke of luck on November 30th, Randy from Signtronix dropped by, obviously because there was no visible sign for the business.

We could not get the sign installed and inspected until March 2003, primarily because of weather and installation schedules for erecting the pole for the sign. The sign was officially lit on March 20th. Amazingly, on the 22nd we had a couple driving from Farmington, NM who had stopped to eat at two places that were closed prior to seeing our sign. The reason they stopped was because they saw the hamburger and knew we would have something to eat. There have been many people since then, just passing through, that have stopped because of the sign. The sign definitely works!

Signtronix Shines Through the Looking Glass

Dear Signtronix:

Scott and I just want to tell you of the response we’ve had with our new electronic sign from Signtronix. The moment it arrived at Whiting Motors, it generated interest; first with our employees and then with our customers – even before it was hanging in the window!

As we were unpacking the sign from its crate, several staff members gathered around curious and commenting about how “cool looking” it was! The Service Manager was very pleased when seeing the Whiting’s Service/Goodwrench panel. He said that his shop needed signage like that! We were all pleased at how well your design department did with GM’s “American Revolution” logo in the other panel. We installed this panel in place of the “Thank You for Your Business” panel and it works out well. Based on photos of this panel in the sign, GM paid 100% in co-op advertising dollars.

An elderly couple in our waiting area watched with interest as we changed out panels, and positioned and placed the sign in out very prominent front window. They said that it looked great and even went outside to see how well the reader board “glowed”.

Once Scott made time to study and download the reader board CD, he found it easy to use and change, just like you said! In the first collection of running advertisements, he listed an $11.00 (labor), plus supplies oil change, with the fifth one FREE. We had people we had never seen before coming into the shop to ask about our $11.00 oil changes! He also advertised that we rent cars and I have personally had people ask me about vehicle rentals on the street. Despite having signs around the dealership stating that we rent cars, people who’ve never been in our showroom didn’t know we provided that service. Now, with out Signtronix sign, anyone coming down the street can read that we provide this service and much more than just sales.

Thank you, Mat, for being so tenacious in marketing this sign to both of us! You were very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Scott was so pleased with the sign that he submitted the idea to his NADA 20 Group during their fall meeting. Several other dealers were very interested, and we hope you hear from them. Dear Signtronix:

Well, you were right. We love the new sign. The neighbors must, too – while we were installing it, we heard clapping coming from around the street! When we turned around, there they were, on their porch, each holding a big “Thumbs up” sign, and smiles on their faces.

The reader board feature fits us perfectly. We put up our first message – “Fishermen with boats wanted - $45 and up,” and we started getting fishermen with boats! Coincidence? Price? Hard to tell. On the other side, we could tell our customers that we had kitchens and pets. Very versatile and easy to change. I am glad we decided on that feature.

We noticed an increase in late night customers. It is early winter, and we can get guests as late as 9 pm, where before, our business started to taper off as the sun set. The visibility is great. It looks so professional and easy to spot that we are in the business of helping people really enjoy their time away from home.
